Stand-up paddle boarding is all the rage among surfers in Ireland nowadays, and nowhere more so than in Dublin, with Irish surfers jumping on board to take a paddle in the flats or ride a few mellow Summer swells. Surfdock is leading the charge with 2 fully qualified SUP instructors offering “taster” sessions to wet your appetite, and intensive SUP courses on the Grand Canal Basin, beside the shop in the ship!
With newly refurbished changing facilities, rest zone and BBQ area, “the dock” is fast becoming THE place to be this Summer. Where else in the heart of Dublin can you find open fresh water to frolic about on safely, be it an hour during lunch, a company “bonding” day/night out, or to enroll your kids in to a Summer windsurfing, kayaking and SUP course? Shaper Tom Wegener, and a bunch of Cornish surfers can be seen here experimenting with Alaia wooden surfboards along the Irish coastline. What really pushes the envelope out is the fact that they are fin-free! It’s worth watching this 5 min. clip just to see how loose these boards become when the dynamics are altered. Goes to show how wake-skating, snowboarding and surfing can be blended into one …

In the lead up to Christmas, we’re pulling out all the stops. There’s loads of demand for second hand surfboards, with girlfriends/boyfriends, Mothers/Fathers, friends/colleagues all scrounging around online, and in the surf shops of Dublin, searching for the best surfboard prices and package deals out there. Always responsive to what Irish surfers are telling us & adaptable in surfboard sourcing, we’re amped to announce that there are limited numbers of used 6’0″ retro fish surfboards available for sale now. These boards have barely dipped their toe in the water – they are as good as new.
The price however is very much of the second hand variety; You can grab yourself the fish surfboard, fcs fins, hurricane board bad, hurricane leash and sticky bumps wax, all for just €379 (r.r.p. €500+). Custom shaped to order, these treble-stringer, dual leash plug, 7’6″ big-wave guns are testament to the pioneering ethos over at Surf Merchant Ireland. Recently a couple of team riders were eyeing up some of Ireland’s gnarlier reef wave set-ups. We had a look at the surfing demands of these chasmic Irish hell-waves, and had a yarn with our lead shaper, Dean Geraghty. Immediately on our wavelength, Dean refined and put into production our vision;
Classic gun dimensions with a streamlined, narrow, pin-tail profile, together with extra glassing on hi-stress areas, 2 leash plugs (in case one rips out on a catapult wipe-out!) and a pinstripe of 3 wooden stringer panels for impact-resilience, and stiffness driving through the face of monster swell-lines.
